Another focus in the research has been media literacy connected to children and young people migrating to a new country.
Audiovisually Literate Toddlers and Their Adults
WORKSHOP
How can we as film educators contribute to building audiovisually literate audiences? This is a question that I have been occupied with for over ten years in my research. One of the conventions in film pedagogy, is to use film analysis as a way to understanding moving images. But, when working with very young children or toddlers – who doesn’t yet have a spoken language to express what they see – there is a need for other tools to explore visual literacy. Together with colleagues and students, I have started to come closer to what actually works in terms of developing visual literacy with very young children. The next step in this work is to develop a pedagogy that works for the adults surrounding the children, who has the task to educate the toddlers in audiovisual literacy. This is indeed a challenge, since it is not necessarily the same pedagogic tools that work for the children. In this presentation I will invite you to different examples of case studies departing from exploring audiovisual literacy with young children and their adults.
